Year in Review: Downtown Arlington developments and growth in 2024

In 2024, Downtown Arlington really “walked the talk” with development, new businesses and so many accomplishments!

This year was a celebration of our community’s commitment to progress, passion and purpose. From the roots planted by visionaries like Tom Cravens to today’s leaders and dreamers, Downtown Arlington has flourished into a vibrant destination filled with innovation and heart.

Milestones in Development

This year, over $100 million was poured into transformative downtown projects, including the completion of Fire Station No. 1 and the new Mineral Well fountain. These investments reflect our dedication to enhancing public infrastructure while fostering spaces that invite community and culture.

New development of Urban Union emerged as another hallmark of growth with walkable mixed-use developments featuring new retail and dining destinations, as well as the Rambler Inn, a boutique hotel. Businesses like Blue Mint Thai, The Breakfast Brothers, Truth Vinyl, Goldilinks Jewelry and Victory City Cycles signed leases in this area, set to become a thriving hub of activity.

Simultaneously, the highly-anticipated Rotary Dream Park saw significant progress, with the Dream Sculpture amplifying our district’s focus on placemaking.

A Banner Year for Businesses

Downtown Arlington welcomed an array of new businesses in 2024, each adding unique offerings to our community. Café Americana, led by Chef Moose and his team of world-class chefs, brought a new level of elevated dining experiences. The Mosaic Market charmed shoppers with its collection of local artisan goods. Taipo, a Nepalese restaurant with a speakeasy bar, and favorites like Division Brewing’s new pizza restaurant and Zio Al’s further enriched the local cuisine.

These businesses are part of a larger story of collaboration, passion and investment in a community that inspires both entrepreneurs and patrons to thrive.

Addressing Growth with Innovation

With progress comes challenges, and Downtown Arlington has risen to meet them. The Arlington Clean and Safe Ambassadors, introduced in November 2023, became an invaluable asset this year. Over the course of just one year, their work cleaning sidewalks, removing graffiti and assisting with community outreach has enhanced the downtown experience for residents and visitors alike.

Additionally, initiatives like the Downtown Arlington Paths concept, launched in September, encourage walkability and exploration. These self-guided walks make it easier than ever to connect with all downtown has to offer through curated routes for dog owners, art enthusiasts, runners and more.

Events

This year’s array of events impacted businesses and brought the community together. The Downtown Arlington Classic Car Show saw over 2,700 attendees and more than 160 car owners!

Arlington Pride at Levitt Pavilion also saw another successful year with thousands filling the lawn and hospitality suite. In July, Light Up Arlington brought thousands of spectators to downtown’s streets even though the date was changed from the usual July 3 to June 29.

Our annual meeting in September gathered over 300 local leaders and professionals to discuss the future of downtown’s walkability and encourage everyone to “walk the talk.”

The introduction of Downtown Arlington’s First Thursdays in October has proven to be a local favorite, a great artist showcase and a family-friendly monthly event for the whole community. With more artists, businesses and attendees each month, come check out the next First Thursdays on December 5!

Progress Achievements

Downtown Arlington has proven to “walk the talk” with quite a few accomplishments this year. Exactly one year ago in November, the Arlington Ambassadors were introduced. Their one-year anniversary has been marked with tons of trash cleaned up and hundreds of visitors, locals and business owners helped.

Downtown Arlington was recognized by the Urban Land Institute as a finalist for their IMPACT Awards. Projects like Urban Union and the new Mineral Well Plaza underscore Downtown Arlington’s national recognition as a model of revitalization.

The dedication and commitment of local businesses serving the downtown community has also paid off. Inspirations Catering Fork & Table won the Women-Owned Business of the Year award by the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce.

Looking to the Future

As we approach the opening of The Doggie Depot, an off-leash dog park funded by community donations and grants, we are reminded of the collective spirit that drives Downtown Arlington. The coming year will also see more First Thursdays, a monthly event celebrating local artists, businesses and creativity.

Here’s to another year of progress, art and joy in Downtown Arlington!
