Mission Arlington Considers Volunteering a Blessing
By Lindsey Juarez
Amongst the growing businesses and the changing downtown Arlington landscape stands an organization whose mission has remained the same for nearly 30 years.
Mission Arlington is a family- and volunteer-run charity that’s served the community since 1986. The organization was created by Tillie Burgin and her family.
The Burgins were missionaries in South Korea before returning to the states in 1978. When they returned, they knew their work wasn't done. Tillie Burgin asked herself, “If we could do missions in Korea, why can’t we do missions in Arlington?” Seven years later, Mission Arlington began.
Today, the organization operates seven days a week to provide charitable services to the community. Volunteers help with various services such as dental and medical care, Bible studies, and donation pick up and drop off.
Jim Burgin, Tillie Burgin’s son, said it’s always helpful when someone volunteers their time at Mission Arlington.
“There’s a wide range of opportunities for people to use their gifts and serve,” he said.
The organization occasionally hosts special events, such as the annual Easter egg hunt in which 4,000-5,000 children participate, Jim Burgin said.
Sometimes, professional volunteers will donate their skills at the organization’s Allan Saxe Dental Clinic or the Bob Mann Medical Clinic.
Most volunteers will help with basic tasks such as folding clothes or organizing and sorting food.
Jim Burgin said it’s a beautiful experience to serve the community.
“They’ll get a sense of blessing,” he said. “We believe you’re blessed when you give. It's better to give than to receive.”
Individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer their time and skills.
Jim Burgin said the easiest way for someone to sign up to volunteer is to just stop by Mission Arlington. Located at 210 W. South St., the organization is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-3 p.m. on Sundays.
