Make a difference this Giving Tuesday in Downtown Arlington
With the all-consuming holiday season upon us, there’s a day that stands out for its focus on kindness, generosity and community: Giving Tuesday (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Dec. 3, 2024).
The History of Giving Tuesday
What started in 2012 as a small movement to inspire charitable action after Black Friday and Cyber Monday has grown into a global phenomenon. Giving Tuesday has become a time to reflect on what we have, what we can give and how we can make a difference in our communities.
Giving Tuesday takes place annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is a powerful reminder to channel holiday generosity into impactful actions. Over the years, the movement has inspired millions to donate their time, money and voices to causes they care about. In 2022, Giving Tuesday set a record with an estimated $3.1 billion donated in just one day in the U.S. The beauty of Giving Tuesday lies in the small, heartfelt contributions that ripple through communities.
Support Local
While Giving Tuesday is a global movement, its impact is most deeply felt at the local level. For Arlington residents, this is an opportunity to uplift the community by supporting nonprofits like Mission Arlington and other organizations making a difference year-round.
Mission Arlington’s Thanksgiving Food Drive
Mission Arlington, a cornerstone of the Arlington community since 1986, exemplifies the power of local generosity. Each year, the nonprofit organizes a massive Thanksgiving food drive to ensure that families in need can enjoy a warm holiday meal.
In 2023, Mission Arlington distributed Thanksgiving meals to 28,099 people, a total of about 6,953 families in need, a testament to the collective spirit of Arlington residents.
The drive mobilized more than 4,000 volunteers, including individuals, families and local groups, to sort, package and deliver food items. More than 1,000 turkeys were donated, alongside other essential ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
This year, Mission Arlington is aiming to meet—and surpass—those numbers. By contributing to their Thanksgiving food drive, you’re not only providing a meal but also offering hope and warmth to families during the holiday season.
Get Involved
Giving Tuesday isn’t just about financial contributions; it’s about finding meaningful ways to give back. Here are a few ways Arlington residents can make a difference:
1. Donate
Drop off non-perishable food items, such as canned vegetables, stuffing and boxed desserts, at Mission Arlington’s main office. Turkeys and other proteins are always in high demand as well. Can’t donate food? A financial contribution goes a long way in helping Mission Arlington purchase additional supplies.
Arlington’s arts and cultural nonprofits enrich the community year-round. Consider donating to these organizations, especially this time of year.
2. Volunteer
Mission Arlington’s Thanksgiving drive relies on an army of volunteers to sort, assemble and deliver meals. Whether you have an hour or an entire day to spare, your time will directly impact the community.
Other Arlington nonprofits, like Arlington Charities and SafeHaven of Tarrant County, also need volunteers during the holiday season.
3. Support Shelters and Food Pantries
Donate warm clothing, blankets, or hygiene items to organizations like Arlington Life Shelter, The Salvation Army or UTA’s Maverick Pantry.
Volunteer at local shelters to serve meals or organize donation drives in your neighborhood.
4. Share on Social Media
A simple post encouraging your friends and family to give can amplify the impact of Giving Tuesday. Use hashtags like #GivingTuesday and #DowntownArlingtonGives to spread the word.
As Giving Tuesday approaches, let’s channel the spirit of gratitude into community action. Downtown Arlington is filled with compassionate and caring residents, and together, we can build a brighter, stronger community. Whether it’s through a monetary gift, volunteering your time or spreading awareness, your participation this Giving Tuesday will help ensure that the season of giving truly makes an impact.
