Downtown Arlington Offers Healthy Dining Options

By Jillian Dennis

Downtown Arlington is home to several great restaurants. I should know because I live right down the street from most of them. Most of these hot spots have delicious food choices, and I have dined at almost all of the restaurants around here.

I like to eat gluten-free food, but I know many people still eat gluten. Us “gluten-free eaters” are a small community. Every place that has gluten-free selections still offers the same selections without being gluten-free.

I love going to Twisted Root and Grease Monkey. They both have a great gluten-free burger. It tastes just as delicious as a regular burger. I promise you can’t tell a difference in taste. They also serve them with gluten-free fries. YUM! Grease Monkey’s gluten-free option is not on their menu, so you have to ask about it.

Jimmy John’s and Freebird’s World Burrito are next door to each other on Abram Street in downtown. These are both really great places if you need a quick lunch, especially for college kids nearby. Jimmy John’s offers a couple of different vegetarian sandwiches and the JJ’s Unwhich. The Unwhich takes any sandwich you like and makes it a lettuce wrap, which is also gluten-free. Freebird’s is great for anyone. You choose what you want in your bowl or burrito, so it’s truly customized to YOU!

When looking for pizza places there are two choices in downtown: Mellow Mushroom  and Old School Pizza and Suds. Who doesn't love pizza? Both pizza shops have great vegetarian options, but I love going to Mellow Mushroom because they have a full gluten-free menu as well as allergen menus.

For gluten-free options at College Park Station, try Grip Mediterranean Grill , Pie Five Pizza Co. or Digg’s Taco Shop. They also have tons of vegetarian choices for the herbivores out there.
