Winter at the AMA: Printmaking, Portraiture and a Holiday Pop-Up Shop

Known for its creativity in curating exhibitions and community programs, the Arlington Museum of Art has once again filled its galleries with a diverse array of art from around the globe and up the street. Headlining the museum’s winter show is a collection of works by Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, who is widely considered the greatest German artist of all time.

The Last Supper, Albrecht DürerAlbrecht Dürer: Master Prints, on loan from the Reading Public Museum, features 39 pieces by (or after) Dürer and will be on display at the AMA through February 23, 2020.

“We are excited to display Dürer’s masterful work and host events such as a children’s tour featuring introductory German vocabulary and educational lectures to give our visitors interactive learning experiences,” said AMA Executive Director Brian White.

A master printmaker, Dürer achieved a deity-like status in his career through his ability to create a self-made image of nobility. Known for his highly detailed and innovative woodblock prints, Dürer (1471- 1528) was a trained goldsmith, draftsman, painter, and etcher. The range of subjects in the exhibition includes narratives from the Old and New Testaments and mythology, portraits, and images of saints.

Some of the most celebrated of his works on display at the Museum include Small Woodcut Passion (1508-10), Life of the Virgin (1503-10), and the full set of sixteen prints from the famous Engraved Passion (1507-12).

Dennis Hevia PROTECTOR In addition to the Dürer collection in the main galleries, the Arlington Museum of Art also welcomes local photographer Dennis Hevia to its rooftop gallery and the debut of his stunning new collection of photographs entitled Portraits. The collection dramatically pays homage to the old masters of portraiture while enlisting the tools of the 21st century.

Portraits runs through February 23, 2020.

Happy Holidays Pop Up ShopMeanwhile, in the Museum’s basement, a variety of local artists have come together to host the 817 Arts Alliance Happy Holidays Pop-Up Shop. A variety of handicrafts are available including pottery, jewelry, photography, notecards, weaving, and much more.

Shoppers are welcome during regular museum hours, and the Pop-Up Shop is open through December 22, 2019.
