I Love Downtown Arlington: Let’s Hear it for the Girls

Happy Galentine’s Day! As fans of Downtown Arlington, we love this new variation on the old Valentine’s Day traditions. Why? Because it takes us back to grade school, when picking out Valentine cards wasn’t as much about that ONE special someone as it was about ALL the special someones!

Remember going to the store with Mom or Gramma to pick out an entire box of Valentines cards to give to your classmates? Pink and girlie, bold and superhero-y, dinosaurs and puppies, sweet and funny: so many options! Which to choose? Later at home, as you pull every card out of the box, the decision-making process begins again as one-by-one you match each card to its soulmate.

Times may have changed, but nothing’s changed our desire to perfectly express our feelings to special people in our lives, especially our besties. As fans of Downtown Arlington, we see inspiration all around us for Galentine’s Day, including:

Girl Bosses
We’re proud of our women-owned businesses in Downtown Arlington! What better time to support them than Galentine’s Day? For great women’s clothing, floral arrangements, accessories, antiques, and gift items, be sure to check out Wildfire and Lace Boutique, H.E. Cannon Floral, and Wondrous Works in Wood. If you’re looking for a sweet treat or meal out with your friends, we’re sweet on these women-owned or co-owned restaurants: Sugar Bee Sweets Bakery, The Hive, Inspirations Catering, Restaurant 506, Salter Bros. Coffee Roasters, Tipsy Oak, and J.R. Bentley’s English Pub.

Lady Mavericks
Celebrate girl power, team spirit and UT Arlington pride all at once! Under the direction of Head Coach and former WNBA star Shereka Wright, the Lady Mavericks take on rivals Texas State at College Park Center at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, which is also UTA Beat Cancer Night.

WNBA Wings
Speaking of girl power: Season memberships are already available for the WNBA Dallas Wings 2021 regular season. This powerhouse franchise proudly shares the same home court with the UTA Mavericks, right here in Downtown Arlington.

Friends Forever
The arts in Arlington are full of creative energy and can-do spirit, thanks in part to these former Sam Houston High School gal pals who are now part of the leadership teams at three Downtown arts organizations: Kim Turner Lawson with Theatre Arlington, Letatia Teykl with Levitt Pavilion, and Kellie Reichert with Arlington Museum of Art. Two more of their friends – Becky Philips and Belinda Caylor – serve respectively on the Theatre Arlington and Levitt Boards of Directors. Read their story.

The He(art) of Downtown
Get to the he(art) of the matter right here in Downtown, where you can find all kinds of arts-inspired ways to express your Galentine’s Day wishes, including the Vivian Maier exhibition at the Arlington Museum of Art; concerts at Arlington Music Hall; DIY workshops at Board & Brush Arlington, the Downtown Library and Catalyst Creative Arts; local art show at Create Arlington; and performances hosted by Symphony Arlington, Theatre Arlington and the University of Texas at Arlington Music Department.
