A Mumentous Exhibit for the Arlington Museum of Art

The Arlington Museum of Art’s latest exhibit is like nothing before it. Friday night lights is coming to the art scene.

Through MUMENTOUS: The Upsizing of a Texas Tradition, visitors are transported back to the high school football experience, squishy green turf and all. This multimedia exhibit has so many facets, you’ll never look at Texas homecoming mums the same way.

The exhibit focuses not only on the mums themselves -- how they’ve changed from school spirit expressions to individual expressions -- but also the entrepreneurial women behind the homecoming mum industry, the history of homecoming, mums in the media, and more. It’s the culmination of over three years of creativity and research by Amy J. Schultz, the Arlington Museum of Art’s first ever artist-in-residence.

Schultz, the artist, writer, and creative force behind unplane jane studio, focuses on telling the story of her Mumentous subjects through photography, video, audio, digital, a three-dimensional installation, and narrative. The stories behind homecoming mums and garters include today’s student experience, women led buyers groups for crafting supplies, and the makers behind the mums.

The homecoming mum industry has changed band booster fundraising efforts, empowered women across the state starting their own small businesses, and has resulted in a large scale economic impact beyond anyone’s expectations. There’s even an alternative mum movement.

These stories are close to home, but larger than anyone imagined.

To experience the story for yourself, visit the Arlington Museum of Art now through November 24th. As you enjoy your visit to the Museum, chances are that you’ll run into Amy herself.
