Your Self-Guided History Tour of Downtown Arlington

Sometimes the best way to get to know a place is by taking a walk. Downtown Arlington is full of history, stories and art waiting to be discovered on foot. Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, this casual walking tour will guide you through some of our most unique and historic landmarks. Lace up your walking shoes, grab a friend and set out on a journey through the heart of Arlington’s past and present.

Stop 1: Theatre Arlington Walk of Fame

Start your tour at Theatre Arlington, one of the oldest and largest community theaters in the nation. Just outside its doors, you’ll find their Walk of Fame, where commemorative bricks honor individuals and businesses that have supported the arts. Take a moment to stroll along the walkway, reading the names of community members who have shaped Arlington’s creative culture. It’s a perfect introduction to Downtown’s deep connection with the arts.

If you have time, step inside and peek at the theatre’s schedule. There’s always an upcoming production worth seeing.

Stop 2: The Vandergriff Building

From Theatre Arlington, start east and cross the train tracks to the Vandergriff Building, one of Downtown Arlington’s most iconic historic landmarks. Built in 1928, it once housed the Vandergriff Chevrolet dealership and stands today as a reminder of the city’s early automotive and business history.

The building’s elegant brick with murals and preserved architectural details transport you back nearly a century, when Arlington was still a small town growing along the interurban railway line. Today, it’s home to a mix of offices and local businesses, proving that historic spaces can continue to serve the community in fresh, modern ways. Be sure to pause here for a photo, this building is one of Downtown’s most photographed spots.

Stop 3: Knapp Heritage Park

Head west on Front Street toward Knapp Heritage Park, located near the intersection of Front and Pecan streets. Operated by the Arlington Historical Society, this small but

charming park features three of the city’s oldest preserved structures: the Fielder House, a one-room schoolhouse and two historic pioneer log cabins.

As you wander the grounds, imagine what life was like for Arlington’s earliest settlers. The park regularly hosts living history demonstrations and community events, but even on a quiet afternoon, it’s a peaceful place to reflect on our city’s roots. You’ll also find plaques and interpretive signs that share more about the people who helped shape early Arlington.

Bonus Stops Along the Way

While your main tour highlights are Theatre Arlington, the Vandergriff Building and Knapp Heritage Park, keep your eyes open for public art and historical plaques scattered throughout Downtown. From colorful murals to sculptures tucked in courtyards, Downtown Arlington tells its story not just through preserved buildings but also through creative expression.

Take a short detour to the Downtown Library Plaza to enjoy public art installations, or swing by the Doggie Depot to spot cute pups enjoying the latest public improvement project that reflects the railroad town’s history.

Make It Your Own

This self-guided tour is just a starting point. Downtown Arlington is a walkable district filled with surprises: coffee shops in modern storefronts, art installations on nearly every block and live music venues that carry on the city’s community traditions.
