Seven Worthy New Year’s Resolutions That We Can Help You Keep

Every year it’s the same quandary: Do I or don’t I make New Year’s resolutions... because if I do, will I see them through?

Here at DAMC, we’d like to help. Here’s our list of seven worthy, fun and motivating resolutions for 2019 that we’re all sure to keep, thanks to a little help from our friends in Downtown Arlington.

Tap my keyboard less and my toes more.

There is an increasingly robust music scene in Downtown Arlington, driven by three anchors: Arlington Music Hall, University of Texas at Arlington and the Levitt Pavilion. Between these three amazing and diverse venues, you can enjoy hundreds of shows from classical to country, R&B to rock, Tejano to jazz, and bluegrass to pop. In addition, there are a growing number of bars and restaurants that also host great live music year-round, including Grease Monkey, Truth Vinyl, Division Brewing/GROWL, J. Gilligan's, J.R. Bentley's, The Tipsy Oak, Legal Draft, 4 Kahunas and Taco Cartel Bar.

Save money on family time.

Family time is always a top priority, but sometimes it can be tough to find quality activities that are affordable. In addition to the free concerts at the Levitt, be sure to add these great family-friendly experiences to your list of resolutions: UTA Planetarium star shows, Dallas Wings WNBA and UTA Mavericks games and fan activities (both in College Park Center), exhibitions at the Arlington Museum of Art and UTA galleries, kids shows at Theatre Arlington, summer camps hosted by numerous Downtown partners, and programs at the Downtown Library.

Play like a kid again.

Speaking of great bargains, you’ve got to check out Free Play Arlington. For one low admission price, you can play over one hundred of your favorite arcade video games. No quarters! While you’re traveling down memory lane, be sure to frequent Truth Vinyl and GROWL to pick up those vinyl albums (used and new) and comics that you always wanted as a kid but just couldn’t afford on your allowance.

Find my next go-to drink.

Downtown Arlington has a unique and rapidly evolving after-hours scene, and that includes a growing number of expert vintners, craft beer brewers and mixologists. Why not make 2019 the year you break away from your routine and experience something completely fresh and new? The barkeeps at 4 Kahunas Tiki Bar, The Tipsy Oak, Hooligan's Pub and Cartel Taco Bar would be happy to offer suggestions. Or break away from that old label with a locally-brewed beer from Division Brewing and Legal Draft or ask the fine folks at Kool Keg and On Tap their recommendations. Wine lovers will delight in the recently-updated wine list at Urban Alchemy Coffee + Wine Bar, and don't forget the Van Gogh Bar & Lounge at the Sanford House Inn for a cozy happy hour setting.

Volunteer for the next team-building, friendiversary or party planning committee, then knock it out of the park.

When it's time to plan a group activity, it's time to call us and brainstorm! The staff at DAMC is happy to help you find the perfect location. We think the spaces at Legal Draft, Arlington Museum of Art, Division Brewing and Urban Alchemy -- not to mention a plethora of options at UTA – will perfectly fit your needs. We also recommend that you bring your group closer together through shared experiences. Consider a private charcuterie party at Inspirations Catering, crafting at Board & Brush Creative Studio, private art and crafts workshops hosted by numerous local teacher/artists, and Powered by Play teambuilding.

Release my inner trivia master.

Put all that random knowledge of 90's music, football stats, and U.S. state capitals to the test. Grab your brainy pals and coworkers and get to J.R. Bentley's on Mondays and Mellow Mushroom on Tuesdays for their regular trivia nights. Watch the online event calendars of Legal Draft and others for additional trivia contests.

Perform intentional acts of kindness.

The best resolutions are the one that make an impact, not only on your life but on the lives of others. Consider making 2019 the year that you volunteer or donate to your favorite Downtown educational/cultural non-profit or charity, such as Mission Arlington, the Levitt Foundation, Arlington Museum of Art, Theatre Arlington, Symphony Arlington, Salvation Army YET, UTA, and more.
