Five Great Things for UTA Students to do in Downtown Arlington this Fall Semester
Five Great Things for UTA Students to do in Downtown Arlington
by Chase Fowler
As one of the Cultural District interns at Downtown Arlington this summer, I’ve discovered that there is plenty to do in UTA’s backyard. As we start classes up again, we all have to find ways to make the semester a little bit more enjoyable. Here’s my top five suggested activities to do just that!
1. Find the perfect study spot
A change of scenery can be helpful during a long study session. Downtown Arlington has excellent coffee shops and an active patio life that is great for studying with friends in a social setting. If you want to study somewhere quieter, head to the Downtown Library or one of the co-working spaces. These are all great places to do homework while enjoying the city.
2. Grab a bite to eat
Downtown is a foodie's dream, thanks to the variety of options. If you and your friends want a delicious meal, head to Hurtado’s Barbecue, The Grease Monkey, or Hershey’s Palace. If you’re in the mood for a snack, could check out Kung Fu Tea, Rita’s Italian Ice, or Sugar Bee Sweets Bakery.
3. Get creative
Downtown is designated the Arlington Cultural District by the Texas Commission on the Arts. The community fosters creativity and expression, making it a perfect place for students. Looking to start a new project or take an idea to the next level? The Downtown Arlington Creator Club provides affordable equipment rentals for photography, podcasts, music production, and more. The Club also meets regularly to provide networking and inspiration! In addition, explore Downtown’s art studios and galleries like Create Arlington, Catalyst Creative Arts, and Studio 204. You can also get inspired by enjoying free live music at the Levitt Pavilion, seeing a local production of your favorite plays at Theatre Arlington, or by taking in the world-class art exhibitions at the Arlington Museum of Art.
4. Take a break
Being a student is not always easy. It’s important to remember to take care of yourself and take a break once in a while. A simple but effective way to do this is by going on a walk. Downtown has walkable streets, public art, and green parks, Founders Plaza, Knapp Heritage Park, and others that are perfect for a stress-relieving stroll.
5. Have fun!
This wouldn’t be a complete list for students (21 and older!) if it didn’t mention the best places to stop for a drink with friends. The proximity to campus and numerous spots make Downtown Arlington a fun place for a bar crawl or a casual night out. J Gilligan’s, Binions Ice House, The Tipsy Oak, 4 Kahunas Tiki Lounge, Free Play, and Division Brewing are a few of the great options. Always remember to drink responsibly. In partnership with Downtown, UTA provides a free late-night security escort that runs from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. every day of the week. Download the Transloc app to get started.
