Your Guide to Summer Fun with Kids in Downtown Arlington

Summer in Downtown Arlington is made for making memories. Think outdoor concerts, hands-on creativity and plenty of ways to keep kids entertained (and off screens). Whether you’re a parent planning full days or a grandparent looking for easy outings, downtown offers a mix of events, activities and everyday adventures that work for all ages.

Here’s your go-to guide for kid-friendly fun in downtown all summer long:

Start with Discover Summer at the Arlington Public Library

If you’re looking for one place to begin your summer planning, start at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.

Arlington Public Library’s Discover Summer programming turns the library into a hub for summer learning, creativity and fun. Families can sign up for the Discover Summer Challenge through Beanstack, track reading, earn tickets and participate in prize drawings throughout the summer. It’s a simple way to keep kids reading while giving them a reason to stay excited and engaged.

Even better, Discover Summer goes far beyond books. Families can look forward to programs, games, crafts, performances, activities and other hands-on experiences designed to help kids explore new interests. For parents and grandparents, it is one of the easiest summer wins: free, educational, air-conditioned and right in the heart of Downtown Arlington.

The Discover Summer Kickoff on Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Downtown Library is also a great way to start the season, with activities, crafts, games and plenty of summer fun for families. From there, you can keep checking the Library’s calendar for new programs throughout Discover Summer from June 1 through July 31.

Free Events & Family Nights

One of the easiest (and most budget-friendly) ways to enjoy summer is by taking advantage of Downtown Arlington’s packed event calendar.

At the heart of it all is the Levitt Pavilion, where free concerts and family-friendly performances happen all summer long. Bring lawn chairs, snacks and let the kids dance while you relax. These shows are for all ages and create a laid-back, community vibe.

Don’t miss signature events like:

  • First Thursdays, our monthly evenings filled with live music, art activities and interactive experiences across downtown
  • Seasonal celebrations like the Downtown Arlington Classic Car Show, Light Up Arlington and the Arlington Independence Day Parade, long-standing traditions that draw families year after year

Camps, Classes & Creativity

If your kids love to create, perform and imagine, Downtown Arlington has plenty of ways to keep them busy beyond one-time events.

Check out:

  • Theatre Arlington for summer theatre camps where kids can act, sing, dance, rehearse and perform on stage. Their 2026 summer camps include musical theatre options for kids and teens, with several sessions designed around full performance experiences.
  • Miss Persis Studio of Dance for dance classes in the heart of Downtown Arlington, including tap, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, hip hop and lyrical.

These programs help kids build confidence, learn new skills, stay active and have fun throughout the summer. They’re especially helpful for families looking to balance entertainment with enrichment.

Beat the Heat

When Texas temperatures climb, downtown has plenty of cool indoor options:

  • Tokyo Station by Free Play – This vibrant Japanese arcade is just $12.89 for access to a massive selection of Japanese imports, classic American versions of Japanese games and pinball. Kid free after 9 p.m.
  • UTA Planetarium – A fun and educational way to explore the stars in air conditioning
  • Cidercade – Get all access to over 300 retro and modern arcade games. Kid-friendly during the day, but strictly 18+ at 9 p.m.

These spots are especially great for kids or midday outings when it’s just too hot to be outside.

Explore & Play Outdoors

Early mornings and evenings are perfect for getting outside in Downtown Arlington.

Take a walk around the district to explore:

  • Public art and murals
  • The Doggie Depot and open spaces
  • Interactive installations like the Rotary Dream Park and Boundless that turn a simple stroll into an adventure

Downtown’s walkability makes it easy for families to explore at their own pace. It’s ideal for strollers, scooters or just letting kids lead the way (hand-in-hand of course).

Make It a Full Day Downtown

Turn your outing into a full experience:

  • Grab a casual meal at a local restaurant
  • Pair an activity with a nearby event
  • End the night with a concert on the Levitt lawn

Downtown Arlington is designed to be a mix-and-match experience, so every visit can feel a little different.
