Major Update: Abram St. Project Construction & Lane Closures

After six months of work to relocate underground utilities along Abram Street and pedestrian improvements at Founders Plaza and the Levitt Pavilion, drivers and visitors to Downtown Arlington will begin to see new road closures and major construction beginning on new phases of the project.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 24, West Street between Abram and Main Streets will be closed to through traffic to allow for the installation of a water line, storm drain line, and electrical conduit across West Street. To minimize the length of the closure, work is scheduled to take place 24 hours a day and be completed by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. Access to businesses located in the closed area will remain available during the closure. Drivers are encouraged to use the detours shown on the map below.

Here are the additional anticipated lane closures and traffic impacts for the coming weeks on and along Abram Street in Downtown Arlington. Closures and detours are subject to changes due to weather and schedule. New or updated information is indicated in bold.

Pecan Street

• Pecan Street, between Abram and Main streets, is closed to through traffic until early November. This closure is necessary to allow for the installation of new sewer lines and improvements to the storm water drainage system. Visitors to the area can access the parking lot located between Pecan and Oak streets from Oak Street.

Cooper Street between UTA Boulevard and Main Street

• The outside lane of northbound Cooper Street will be closed north of UTA Boulevard to Main Street through December 24 to allow for installation of new water line infrastructure. This closure will  not affect southbound traffic.

Abram Street between Mary and Collins

• Installation of a new storm drain and sewer mains will occur in the middle lanes between July 16 and September 15. The middle lanes will be closed. Traffic will switch to the outside lanes.

Abram Street between Cooper and Pecan

• The westbound side of Abram Street, between Cooper and Pecan streets, will be closed and all traffic will be shifted to the eastbound side at the end of this week (July 29-Aug. 3) to allow for installation of new water line infrastructure. This closure is expected to be in effect through April 2019.

Abram Street between Pecan and Center

• With the completion of the new ADA-compliant ramp located at the southeast corner of City Hall and the closure of Pecan Street, the temporary ADA ramp located at the northeast corner of Abram and Pecan streets has been closed. Work to remove the ramp will take place on Sept. 21-22. A pedestrian detour is in place to direct visitors from the parking lot west of City Hall to the north entrance of City Hall.
• The outside lanes of eastbound and westbound Abram Street between Pecan and Center streets, which is the area between City Hall and the Levitt Pavilion, will be closed to traffic through September 2018.
• Temporary fencing has been installed along the north side of Founders Plaza across from City Hall to protect visitors to the Downtown park and the Levitt Pavilion from construction activities. Pedestrians can enter the park from the east side of Center Street or from the southwest corner of the Pecan and Abram streets intersection.
• The sidewalk on Abram Street between Center and Pecan streets will be temporarily closed between May 9 and October 2018.  This sidewalk closure is needed due to the ongoing construction activities on the Abram Street Rebuild project for the south City Hall Plaza area and also for pedestrian safety.  Sidewalk detour signs will be installed on Abram Street, Center Street and Mesquite Street to direct pedestrian traffic from Abram Street to the north side of City Hall between the new George W. Hawkes Downtown Library and City Hall.

Abram Street between Oak and Cooper 

• Beginning Monday, June 4, the outside lanes of Abram Street between Oak and Cooper streets will be reopened. Traffic will be moved to these lanes to allow for work on the insides lanes in this section until further notice.

Getting Around Downtown

Free parking is available throughout Downtown, including in the public lot west of City Hall, in the 101 Center Parking garage, along Front Street, and in the new reverse-angle parking spaces along Abram, Center and Mesquite streets.
