“Keith Haring: Against All Odds” Comes to Downtown Arlington

Works by the iconic modern artist will be exhibited exclusively in DFW at the Arlington Museum of Art

In keeping with its commitment to exhibit world-class art that is both diverse and compelling, the Arlington Museum of Art announced recently that its next exhibition will be Keith Haring: Against All Odds. The exhibition, which consists of over fifty original pieces, will run from June 21 to September 15, 2019.

Keith Haring (1958-1990) was an iconic modern artist who helped to revolutionize the approach to art by combining fine art with pop culture. While Haring’s colorful line drawings captured the world’s attention and characterized the style of the 1980s, Keith Haring: Against All Odds strives to deconstruct the traditional view of Haring as an artist.

Beyond his well-known graphic iconography, the exhibition also explores his use of mark-making as a metaphor and his desire to address weighty themes including consumerism, poverty, religious dogma, violence, racism and AIDS.  In 1988, Haring himself was diagnosed with AIDS and in the remaining two years of his life, he established the Keith Haring Foundation which provides funding and imagery to AIDS awareness programs and organizations that work with children.

“Haring’s art explores universal concepts in ways that are uniquely accessible,” said Aldo Fritz, executive director of the Arlington Museum of Art., “The themes represented in his work are just as relevant today as they were in the 1980s.”

Over the last several years, the Arlington Museum of Art has brought many renowned artists to North Texas, including works by Vivian Maier, Ansel Adams, Toulouse Lautrec, Rembrandt, Pablo Picasso, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Milton Greene.

“By bringing powerful exhibitions like these to Arlington and the North Texas region,” said Fritz, “we hope to encourage discussion, celebrate the power of self-discovery through art, and reveal the inherent connections between us.”

Sponsorship opportunities for the exhibition are available, and inquiries should be directed to 817-275-4600 or ama@arlingtonmuseum.org.
