It's the Final Week to See Three Powerful Art Exhibitions In and Around Downtown
30 Americans, which is poised to be one of the most popular exhibitions in the museum's history, is wrapping up its tour at the Arlington Museum of Art. A powerful collection of works by thirty emerging and established African American artists, the exhibition's final day is Sunday, September 5.
Curated in partnership with the renowned Rubell Museum in Miami, FL, 30 Americans is a “who’s who” of African American artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mickalene Thomas, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and Kehinde Wiley. While some pieces probe the notion of racial and social difference in a candid manner, others evoke universal concepts and emotions using a sophisticated blend of visual beauty, wit and irony.
30 Americans Conversations
As the exhibition’s live-stream partner, made possible in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, Downtown Arlington co-produced and streamed with the AMA a video of the exhibition installation as well as a “30 Americans” Lecture Series. You can still view the videos on the Arlington Museum of Art Facebook video gallery.
Complementary Exhibitions
In conjunction with 30 Americans, the Arlington ISD Center for Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) and the College Town Renaissance Center are also wrapping up two complementary exhibitions this week. The College Town Renaissance Center exhibition +20 includes works by a variety of local and regional African American aritsts, while the exhibition at CVPA features artist Jacob Lawrence.
Since his first published art in 1963, Jacob Lawrence has produced a body of prints that is both highly dramatic and intensely personal. In his graphic work, as in his paintings, Lawrence has turned to the lessons of history and to his own experience. From depictions of civil rights confrontations to scenes of daily life, these images present a vision of a common struggle toward unity and equality, a universal struggle deeply seated in the depths of the human consciousness.
