Merciful Wisdom
Kelly Curnutt and Doug Hafer, founding partners of Curnutt & Hafer LLP, dedicated over a year searching for the right muralist and right concept to enhance the exterior of their Abram Street offices. Not only did they want a design that could tell the story of their practice but also serve as a gift to their Downtown Arlington neighborhood. Ultimately, they commissioned Arlington-native Chris Gonzalez (aka C. Joseph Art) to paint Merciful Wisdom on their building’s east and north facades.
In Merciful Wisdom, Gonzalez created a stunning and complex visual narrative based on the firm’s core values, “Seek. Serve. Do.” The mural pairs an owl, an emblem of wisdom, with Lady Justice wielding a scale, representing fairness and impartiality in the law. Flowing ribbons bear Latin phrases that translate to “The Law of Living,” “The Law of Believing,” and “The Law of Praying,” thus tying in the firm’s commitment to purposeful action, service, faith, and reflection. Stylistically, the mural blends Gonzalez’s signature bold linework, attention to detail, and high-contrast color palette with classical symbolism, creating a contemporary piece that feels both energetic and timeless.

About the Artist
Chris Gonzalez, aka C. Joseph Art, is a North Texas painter and sculptor whose Mexican‑American heritage and lifelong love of drawing have driven his career path. He started creating at a very young age, and by his early 20s he began painting murals as a freelance artist. That opened doors for him in many ways including a career as a commissioned artist and production designer, working with international brands including Warner Brothers, DreamWorks, Marriott International, and more.
In explaining his artistic mission, Gonzal said, “We know that color can affect our mood and alter our emotions, but I also want to use it to inspire. I want to inspire through one moment in time… that moment where the art captivates you and speaks to you in its very own way. Being able to be an inspiration to my family and those around me, as well as spreading a culture of joy and hope, is how I want to be remembered. A colorful legacy, if you will.”
