Historic Arlington Mural, Lee & Sheri Hay, Vandergriff Bld
Details
Historic Arlington
Artists: Lee and Sheri Hay
Set against the brick facade of the Vandergriff Building, which was built in 1927, Historic Arlington by husband-and-wife duo Lee Hay and Sheri Hay is a vibrant tribute to the city’s past and present.
The Vandergriff Building was originally a car dealership in the heart of the city’s bustling business district. The mural evokes a vintage postcard with its classic car, trains, and Americana motifs plus logos from today, inviting visitors on a visual stroll through Arlington’s eras. What makes this artwork even more noteworthy is its role as a catalyst in Downtown Arlington’s transformation into a hub for public art. One of the earliest large-scale murals in the district, it helped launch a new wave of placemaking through artistic storytelling.
As Lee and Sheri put it, the goal for Historic Arlington was to evoke “a postcard from the past.” Today the mural stands as a landmark piece that both honors the past and signals a fresh identity for the city’s historic downtown.
About the Artists
Lee and Sheri Hay are the creative force behind SaxonLynn Arts, which they founded in 2011. Lee hails originally from London, England while Sheri is Fort Worth, Texas-born and bred. Their shared passion for painting and design sparked during early travels and work together. What began as canvas paintings and skate-board art evolved into a varied career including manylarge-scale public projects.
Lee and Sheri’s specialty in high-impact murals and fine-art installations blend bold color, narrative detail, and community relevance. Along the way they’ve worked with businesses, urban developers, and civic planners, all while staying rooted in the idea that public art can “educate and add beauty” to its surroundings. Their piece Historic Arlington helped kick-start a renaissance in public art that continues throughout Downtown Arlington today.
