Keeping Downtown Arlington Clean
As outlined in our Strategic Action Plan, keeping Downtown Arlington litter free is one of our top priorities. Downtown Arlington is home to many restaurants and cultural attractions and we strive to keep it clean with our community service. We currently have 18 trash receptacles in our downtown and we are planning to add six more throughout the year.
Mission Arlington Partnership
In January 2013, we partnered with Mission Arlington and began a Litter Patrol program. Each week, Mission Arlington spends 8 hours picking up trash. As of September 2013, Mission Arlington has collected 502 bags of trash and has dedicated over 300 hours in their efforts to keep downtown litter free.
East Arlington Renewal Partnership
Downtown Arlington Management Corporation has also partnered with East Arlington Renewal to promote their “See Litter…Pick It Up” campaign. East Arlington Renewal was formally founded in 1982 and is led by Sue Phillips. Their focus has been on the beautification, revitalization and safety of East Arlington and their commitment has seen results. Over the years, they pushed for the police department to bring a satellite center to 2001 New York Ave., to address the growing crime rate. They also worked closely with the police to bring apartments up to code and improve their overall appearance and safety.
The “See Litter…Pick It Up” community service campaign was launched March 2012 and has a simple message. This is OUR community and we all have the responsibility to make it better. It doesn’t matter who threw the trash on the ground. It doesn’t matter if it wasn’t you. If you see litter…pick it up! If everyone participated in this small action, our community would greatly benefit.
