The Arlington Museum of Art announced the opening of an Emerging Artist summer show, the first of its kind for the Museum. The show debuts a transitory collection of new works by painter and mural artist Trey Wilder. It precedes by days the June 21 opening of the highly-anticipated exhibition, Keith Haring: Against All Odds.
An opening reception for Wilder’s show, which is entitled “Most Known Unknown,” will be held Saturday, June 15 from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. in the Museum’s Rooftop Gallery. The show will run through August 2019.
Wilder, who earned his BFA in graphic design from Sam Houston State University, began his career out of college in digital type-setting and logo design. Just a couple years later, Trey and a friend started collaborating on a number of projects, including t-shirt designs. From there, his interest in public art took off. His murals can now be seen throughout North Texas as well as Las Vegas, NV and Oklahoma City, OK. Trey was also one of the two dozen artists chosen to create pieces for the “Star of Texas” public art initiative in Arlington.
When asked how his interest in art began, Wilder said, “I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. It all started with a set of watercolors that my mom gave me, and it grew from there. I’m still evolving as an artist, and so is my work. I want to be able to make a living doing what I love to do, and this amazing opportunity to partner with the Arlington Museum of Art is pushing me closer toward my goals.”
While “Most Known Unknown” is comprised of some paintings on canvas, the bulk of the show features new works by Wilder painted directly onto the walls of the Museum gallery. After the conclusion of the show, the murals will be painted over to make way for future exhibitions.
“Trey is a gifted artist, and the transitory nature of his art is very of-the-moment,” said Aldo Fritz, executive director of the AMA. “His ability to portray contemporary themes in ways that are both provocative and approachable is the ideal complement the Keith Haring exhibition taking place simultaneously in our main galleries.”
The AMA Emerging Artist program is designed to provide early-career, North Texas-based artists the opportunity to exhibit their work in a visible, prestigious gallery space. The selection of each Emerging Artist is based on merit as demonstrated by the artist’s recent body of work, concepts presented in an exhibition proposal, and the perceived growth potential of the artist. Wilder is the first artist invited to participate in the AMA Emerging Artist program.
“By attracting early-career artists through our Emerging Artist program,” said Fritz. “we hope to further accelerate creativity and innovation in Downtown Arlington and throughout the city.”
In addition to the debut of Wilder’s work, the opening reception for “Most Known Unknown” will feature music by DJ Doright. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased through Eventbrite.
